Though it may seem like a cheap attempt to guarantee a certain box-office, or home video return for a film that might otherwise struggle, the history of the girl-girl kiss in movies is a long and illustrious one. It’s not just about getting two hot girls to make out – though of course that doesn’t always hurt the marketing campaigns if someone happens to let it slip ahead of release – instead, these moments have meant something more.
1) Amanda Seyfried Vs Julianne Moore – Chloe
Atom Egoyan’s erotic thriller, with the excellent lead trio of Amanda Seyfried, Julianne Moore and Liam Neeson might not be universally heralded by critics, but audiences responded to the taught sexual tension between the two female leads, as well as the ominous undercurrent of infidelity and intrigue that drove the plot.
The pair play modern star-crossed lovers: a woman who fears her husband is having an affair and the besotted girl who she chooses to set as a honey trap to test his loyalty. Ultimately, Chloe (Seyfried) defies her objectives and makes up an affair between herself and the husband (Neeson) in order to arouse Moore, and seduce her, which unfolds in a gloriously evocative scene in which Moore’s Catherine gives in to her urges.
The Fatal Attraction tones are impossible to resist, and while Egoyan’s execution is never quite wholly successful, the sex-fuelled scenes are easily the best bits, trading on the gripping dynamic between Moore and Seyfried.
